FC Barcelona got another victory in La Liga last night as they beat a difficult Real Sociedad team with a 2-0 scoreline. This victory returned the Catalans to second place in the league table and thus can be key in their pursuit of qualification for the Spanish Super Cup’s next edition.
For this game, Xavi opted for a new defensive setup, as he played Pau Cubarsi and Inigo Martinez in the center of the backline. This combination proved to be a successful one as Barcelona kept a clean sheet.
As Mundo Deportivo has reported, one of the protagonists of this backline, Pau Cubarsi, also talked to the media after the match, and highlighted his experience in this game:
“It was an intense match, they are aggressive, they press you a lot… I tried with Becker so he wouldn’t receive easily. I think it has been a great duel between us.”
The youngster also commented on his partnership with Inigo Martinez in this game:
“We always talk a lot to keep the offside under control. Communication is necessary because there is a lot of space behind. It is essential to keep a clean sheet because we have quality up front and it’s hard for us not to score. If we keep a clean sheet, it’s easier to achieve victories.”
The defender had recently arrived at an agreement for his renewal at Barcelona, and he was quite happy with this new commitment with the club, and also recalled how he enjoys the fans calling his name:
“It’s a dream to be able to play for the club of my life, and I’m very happy, to keep progressing. I love it when the stadium chants my name, but sometimes I’m focused and I don’t hear it.”
Despite being only 17 years of age, Cubarsi has impressed whenever Xavi has put him on the pitch. Now, with the new contract sorted out, Barcelona fans can rest assured they will have one of the best young defenders playing for them for years to come.
