There are only a few days left before the 2024-25 season starts but FC Barcelona still have not been able to arrive at a conclusive end to their top-priority transfer operation, i.e., the acquisition of Nico Williams.

The Catalans are currently fully focused on this operation, but there is no doubt that they will have to work a lot to be able to bring the Spaniard to their team. As a result, the Blaugranes are keeping an eye on some other contingency options if they fail to land the recent EURO 2024 star.

According to Mundo Deportivo, the player that Barcelona have at the top of this contingency list is Liverpool winger, Luis Diaz. The Colombian was already one of the candidates that the Catalans had in mind before the EURO 2024, but with his performances in this competition, Nico Williams became the top priority of the Blaugrana club.

However, Nico’s indecisiveness in committing to Barcelona has once again brought Diaz to the forefront, as the Catalans are now in consensus that he should be the one to reinforce their team if the Athletic Club winger does not arrive.

The Blaugranes are also aware of the affection that the Colombian winger has for them, which was also confessed by the player’s father some time ago. However, he has a contract till 2027 with Liverpool, and the Catalan club’s financial condition can make their pursuit of the winger difficult.

Currently, Barcelona have the required money, €55-60 million, to pay Nico’s release clause. However, they believe the Scousers will demand more than this figure to sell Luis Diaz.

Furthermore, if other clubs like Manchester City also enter the race to sign him, this operation will get further complicated for the Catalans as they cannot compete with the Emirates-owned English side.
