The priority positions that FC Barcelona and head coach Xavi Hernandez wished to reinforce this summer were originally the pivot position and the right-back position, but since it has evolved into other positions also becoming a necessity due to the need to reinforce other areas of the field as well.
As it stands, once the operation for the right-back is completed, one that looks to be quite advanced with the arrival of Portuguese fullback Joao Cancelo on the verge of being concluded, Barcelona will look to turn their attention towards an offensive midfielder and a forward.
According to Spanish journalist Gerard Romero, it appears Barcelona have already decided to take the first step in the direction of the aforementioned offensive midfielder. The journalist claims that the Catalan club has held contacts with the entourage of Argentine midfielder Giovani Lo Celso over the last few days.
The 27-year-old midfielder currently remains contracted to English Premier League side Tottenham Hotspur until 2025 and while Barcelona would be interested in his arrival, Gerard Romero claims that the situation is currently blocked for both parties, at least until Barcelona ensures certain departures to generate additional funds as well as create an improved salary margin to be able to potentially incorporate him within the team.
Currently valued at €14 million by Transfermarkt, the Argentinian midfielder has caught the eyes of Barcelona head coach Xavi Hernandez who believes that he is the right choice for the offensive midfielder that Xavi wishes to incorporate in his Barcelona side in order to provide more offensive creativity and more threat when the Catalan giants have possession of the ball near the opposition goal.
Having been following Lo Celso for quite some time now, the 27-year-old has also had his time to shine in La Liga as he has been able to represent both Real Betis and Villarreal at various points in his career.
His vision and technical ability are no secret and it appears that Barcelona wish to still be able to acquire him in case the right situation lines up for it.
Most recently, the Argentine came up against FC Barcelona in the Joan Gamper Trophy where he performed quite well individually in a game that saw Barcelona emerge as the 4-2 victors at the end of the game.
While he continues to focus on his objectives with Tottenham Hotspur at the moment in England, if Barcelona manage to even get a whiff of a possibility in terms of his potential arrival, the Catalan giants would surely take full advantage of it.
