The way of doing business has been changing in football over the last few years, and clubs including FC Barcelona are now, more than ever, undertaking their deals with an eye on the future. This trend is particularly showcased by the increasing practice of retaining a percentage of rights, capital gains, or rights of first refusal on footballers that they sell, especially the younger ones.

According to a report compiled by Mundo Deportivo, Barcelona have a long list of footballers that do not currently play at the club, but the club has rights over them. There are 17 such players in total, which are mentioned below:

  • 01: Philippe Coutinho
  • 02: Riqui Puig
  • 03: Oscar Mingueza
  • 04: Carles Alena
  • 05: Ferran Jutgla
  • 06: Malcolm
  • 07: Junior Firpo
  • 08: Jean Clair Todibo
  • 09: John Miranda
  • 10: Rey Manaj

Ferran Jutgla was sold to FC Bruges for €5 million, but the club retained a 10% right over any proceeds from the future sale of the player, which is increasingly likely to materialize this summer. The club will also obtain a percentage of profits from the sales of Coutinho and Firpo. The report mentions that Malcolm and Todibo will also provide a percentage of profits to Barcelona, but the actual percentage is not disclosed.

Similarly, the club also retains a right of first refusal and a right of capital gains on players like Juan Miranda (40% of the profit from future sale), Mingueza (50% of the profit from future sale), Riqui Puig (50% of the profit from future sale), Rey Manaj (50% of the profit from future sale), and Carles Alena (50% of the profit from future sale).

In addition to these players, there are a further 7 that are currently on loan, including Abde, Nico, Trincao, Dest, Lenglet, Collado, and Umtiti. Only the contracts of Trincao and Dest have a purchase option included in them, while the other 5 are sure to return to the club at the end of the season.

  • 01: Ez Abde
  • 02: Nico Gonzalez
  • 03: Sergiño Dest
  • 04: Clement Lenglet
  • 05: Samuel Umtiti
  • 06: Francisco Trincão
  • 07: Alex Collado

From among these players, only Abde and Nico can realistically be believed to have a potential place in the Barcelona team, while the others will have to be moved on, either permanently or on loan.
