FC Barcelona are currently facing a number of problems and issues off-the-field that must be addressed promptly. From the likes of the Negreira case to the current restrictions of Financial fair play, it is not unexpected of the club to resort towards more drastic measures.
The most recent of such measures has been the revelation that Jordi Alba, Barcelona’s veteran left-back and decorated player, will have to be faced with some contractual details that the board feels are unwarranted and unsustainable for the club’s financial resources as per the reports from Diario AS.
The 34-year-old’s current contract contains an ascending salary amount that will have progressed to becoming the biggest one among the entire squad when the new season begins. This particular type of contract was agreed upon and presented by none other than the infamous former Barcelona president, Josep Maria Bartomeu. Bartomeu had also agreed to similar ongoing contracts with the likes of Frenkie De Jong and Marc Andre Ter Stegen.
Moreover, there are certain deferred payments also yet to be provided to the player from the time of the COVID-19 pandemic, during which a lot of payments as such had to be deferred due to the vulnerable economic condition of the club. These will also have to be negotiated and ideally forgone.
The Barcelona veteran would be expected to hopefully come to terms with the various conditions presented, but should he be unwilling the club may even go to the extent of offloading the player or even terminating the fullback’s contract should the need arise. A dire measure, but one that is expected to be made out of necessity.
Alba has seen himself go down the pecking order this season in terms of Xavi’s preferred starters and has seen his position be now occupied by talented youngster Alejandro Balde, who himself has begun to make quite the name for himself. Rather than be frustrated, the veteran has accepted the youngster’s emergence with open arms and continues to be supportive of his development.
