FC Barcelona is one of the top clubs in the world which develops and promotes footballing talent. The club has its famed La Masia academy, which performs the role of a talent factory for the club and provides it with low-cost but high-quality footballers, but the Catalans have also keenly scouted youngsters from different areas of the world who have the potential to develop into world-class players.
One of the players that Barcelona are currently keeping an eye on is the Paraguayan winger, Matias Segovia. The 20-year-old has been one of the emerging players in the Brazilian Serie A, playing for Botafogo. His club is leading the league table right now and has gathered a 12-point gap over their other title challengers.
While Segovia has not yet started any game in the league, his 12 substitute appearances have made him a favorite of the club’s fans, who belovingly call him “Segovinha”. The player has the left foot as his stronger one, with which he is yet to score a goal in the first division, but has already given an assist in the match against Corinthians.
These substitute performances have not only caught the attention of the club fans, but also that of several major clubs in Europe. Mundo Deportivo reports that Barcelona are one of these clubs that is currently monitoring Segovia, and have him in their sights since the 2019 U-17 World Cup in Brazil.
While the youngster has impressed with his quality on the ball, Barcelona still have doubts about his physicality. The player is still 163 centimeters tall and 54 kilograms in weight, and the Blaugranes are aware of both his footballing and physical evolution.
Lyon and Crystal Palace are two other European sides who are interested in Segovia. The winger can turn out to be a top-class player in the years to come, but he has still to develop, especially physically, to become a player at one of the top European sides like FC Barcelona.
