FC Barcelona have a number of rising youth talents in their sights, whom they intend to get locked down before their value goes sky high. The Uruguayan midfielder, Fabricio Diaz, is one such player, who has also been impressing on the world stage in the last few days.
The FIFA U-20 World Cup had been underway during the last month, and concluded with the final between Uruguay and Italy last night. Uruguay emerged as the winners of this edition of the U-20 World Cup, as they edged out the Italians with a 1-0 victory.
Luciano Rodriguez scored the only goal of the final in the 86th minute, and the Italians were unable to respond to his strike. In this final, Fabricio Diaz himself was a standout performer, which further complemented his effective performances throughout the tournament.
Although he has played with the national team mainly as a pivot, he has been one of the most offensively effective players in the tournament. He made 31 key passes during the World Cup, which was a tournament-best, and also leads the table of most chances created with 20.
The player started all of his side’s games, but was not able to get his scoring account opened in the tournament. Still, the player has continued with his impressive form that he showed in the South American U-20 championship earlier in the year, where he scored 5 goals, and was defeated only in the final to Brazil.
As Diaz continues with his amazing performances with his national side, he is also coming in increasing sights of Barcelona and other major European clubs. The player has already expressed his excitement on generating interest from FC Barcelona.
The Catalan club meanwhile is busy with preparations for one of its more hectic summer transfer windows in recent years. As a result, SPORT reports that a fresh approach has not been made for Diaz. However, this can change as the player continues to attract their attention, and as his current valuation of €6 million rises further.
