FC Barcelona continues to face a bit of a shortage in quality when it comes to certain positions. Despite having recruited well during the summer and having brought in several new players, some doubts linger. These will have to be sorted out in the summer of 2024 naturally.
While positions like the frontline seem sorted, at least until the loan of Joao Felix is active, there are concerns. One of the primary issues that Barcelona continue to face is the lack of quality in the fullback positions. While the starters are of immense quality, the depth lacks the same level of strength.
Fullback dilemma
Primarily, the right-back position leaves a lot of doubt. Joao Cancelo is currently in charge of the right-back position and he has done extremely well. The same can be said for Alejandro Balde in the left-back position.
However, given that his backup consists of Marcos Alonso as the only other left-back, doubts arise. As such, Barça have been frequently linked to various left backs that could be worth bringing in as second-choice.
Shining Loanee
The latest report on Sergino Dest, however, may make Barcelona think twice about recruiting someone new. Already a Barça fullback, Mundo Deportivo highlights how dependable he’s been in PSV on loan. Back to his Dutch origins where he caught European attention due to his time in Ajax, Dest is flourishing.
Having started 5 out of the last 5 games for PSV, Dest has been great with his current employer. Moreover, his recent performances with the United States Men’s National team have also been promising.
A particular moment of magic has been going viral from his recent display against Ghana that the USA managed to win 4-0, in which he dribbled past multiple defenders in a fury of pace.
A capable left-back
Interestingly, many of his great performances have come from the left-back position. Despite specializing as a right-back, the American fullback is equally capable of playing from the left. This particular facet of his game could be useful to Xavi Hernandez and his Barcelona side.
Dest returns from loan in the summer of 2024 and ends his run with PSV by then. He is expected to come back to FC Barcelona and while his future is still up in the air after that, he may just end up staying a bit longer if he continues to display his talent and confidence as he is now.
