Certain players within FC Barcelona continue to be a massive problem for the Catalan giants to count on given their significant salaries which have become rather unsustainable for La Blaugrana if they are to pursue other targets across the summer transfer window.
One such player that the Barcelona coaches do not count on for the upcoming 2023/2024 season is French central defender Clement Lenglet, who is not only a sporting surplus within the team but also an economic liability at the moment.
Considering various deferrals, Lenglet’s salary at Barcelona reaches a point where it becomes one of the most significant ones within the squad and thus an unfeasible one for Barcelona to continue paying for an out-of-favor player.
As a result, negotiations have continued with English Premier League outfit Tottenham Hotspur as per various sources. However, it appears that a stalemate may have been reached in those negotiations according to Spanish outlet SPORT.
Provided that Spurs would be taking over his entire salary, including the deferred payments, the English club was then consequently not willing to meet Barca’s demands of a €15 million transfer fee on top of that.
These rather slow negotiations have now prompted Spurs to be almost willing to pull out of the operation due to the insistence of Barcelona on the €15 million in question.
As a result, according to the report, Barcelona could very well turn their attention back towards the Saudi Arabian interest in the player with Al-Nassr having already made it clear that they would be willing to take over the salary as well as offer the €15 million that Barcelona are demanding.
However, the main hurdle in the case of Al-Nassr’s offer is that Lenglet wishes to continue competing in Europe and looks rather fondly towards Spurs given he had a solid loan season last time around at the English club.
Barcelona and the 28-year-old French defender will now likely hold a few meetings going forward. The Catalan club would prefer to persuade the player to join Al-Nassr. Given that Lenglet has not exactly proven to be difficult to negotiate with on such matters, there is a belief that a positive agreement could be reached.
