Although there have been no changes in the FC Barcelona squad in this winter transfer window, the Catalans are still working to strengthen the weaker positions in the team for the next season.
As has been the case since Deco’s arrival at the Blaugrana club, the first priority is to look for solutions in the academy and go to the market only if a desired profile cannot be found from the youth ranks.
There are two positions that Barcelona have been looking to strengthen from the market in the last few months, i.e., the left wing and the center of the defense. For the former position, they were linked with the likes of Nico Williams and Federico Chiesa last summer, while for the latter, Jonathan Tah is likely to arrive as he can be signed for free in the upcoming summer.
But according to SPORT, the strengthening of a third position has also gained strength in the last few weeks, as Hansi Flick has requested Deco to bring a right-back as well. The strengthening of this position is even more of a priority than that of the left flank.
For now, the Catalans have not contacted the agents of any players who can be brought for this position, mainly because the Sporting Department is still in the analysis phase, observing and collecting information and considering it internally. There is not even an objective set or a list established yet.
However, one general desire of the Blaugranes is to get a player who would not need a period of adaptation after his arrival, and who can raise the competitive level of the team right from the get-go.
But as has been the case with their other operations, the signing of a right-back will materialize only after Barcelona sell some of their current players. Their return to the 1:1 rule will definitely facilitate their work in the market, but to take advantage of this changed status, the Catalans will first have to ensure some departures.
