Like any major club, Barcelona have been paying close attention to the World Cup, with Sporting Director Deco reportedly in the United States to view some of the games in person. One of the players they had identified as a potential target has enjoyed an impressive debut in a major tournament.
That would be Australian defender Lucas Herrington. The 18-year-old central defender was a starter for the Socceroos at the World Cup, and performed well for the most part, with Australia conceding just three times in their four outings. It did come to an end against Egypt on Friday, with Herrington one of the players to step up and miss their penalty. The shootout ended 4-2 in favour of the Pharaohs, following a 1-1 draw.
Although Herrington missed his spot kick, many have praised the teenager for the personality he showed in volunteering to take a penalty.
Barcelona maintain interest in Lucas Herrington

As reported by Sport, Barcelona maintain an interest in Herrington, and they intend to try and sign him at some point this summer. They believe that his ability on the ball, physical profile (194cm tall) and ability in the air would fit in well at the club, meeting many of the characteristics they are looking for. The Catalan daily explains that Herrington has left a very positive impression on Barcelona following his World Cup performances.
Barcelona have already had an offer turned down for Herrington

Previous reports have indicated that Barcelona’s interest dates back to April, when they traveled to watch him in person for Colorado Rapids. They have even had an initial offer for Herrington turned down, but it could be a deal that becomes too expensive for Barcelona, unless they consider him an immediate contributor to the first team. Their supposed first offer was in the region of €10m, but Colorado are seeking closer to double that amount. Given his showings at the World Cup, it would be no surprise if the competition increases and the price tag rises.
