Since the start of the 2023-24 season, one of the best performers in this FC Barcelona team has been the midfielder Frenkie de Jong. The Dutchman has been in brilliant form this season and has played an important role in allowing Barcelona to get the wins in the last three of their games.
The midfielder is particularly benefiting from a change in the system that has come since Sergio Busquets’ departure from the club. De Jong is now getting more freedom in the midfield, as Romeu has a more positionally fixed role.
Frenkie not in a hurry for a renewal
Frenkie is also one of the team’s captains this season, which goes on to show his increasing importance at the Catalan club. Now, the only problem with Frenkie de Jong at Barcelona currently is his high wages, but the Catalans are already looking to renegotiate his contract in order to decrease his wages and bring their salary bill more in line with the FFP requirements.
However, Luis Rojo of MARCA now reports that the Dutchman is not in any hurry to renew his contract at Barcelona, as his current deal already runs till 2026. The expiry of this contract is still far away, and his renewal is expected to be a slower process as compared to Ter Stegen’s renewal, which helped Barcelona with their FFP objectives.
Cold relations between the two parties
Previously, it was reported here that Barcelona and Frenkie’s entourage currently have calm but cold relations. De Jong’s environment has not forgotten how Frenkie was pushed away from the club previously and was pressed into joining Manchester United against his wishes.
However, with Deco now in charge instead of Mateu Alemany, these relations can improve, and both parties can ultimately agree to an amicable agreement in this matter soon.
