It is no surprise that FC Barcelona have had to be forceful in their recent encounters. The Catalan giants have been critiqued for not showing enough spirit, and that is exactly what they hope to overturn. Now, however, Barcelona are presented with new challenges as a consequence of it.
One player in particular who has had to work non-stop to help out Barcelona in these troubling times has been Frenkie De Jong. Beyond just being one of the captains of the team, he is also a player of the highest quality when it comes to midfielders.
As per SPORT, the Dutchman has been an indefinite incorporation for Xavi in 2024. The 26-year-old has played every single minute for Barcelona this year, and has played every match possible. From the total of 1200 minutes available and played by Barcelona, De Jong has played every single one of them.
This included five La Liga outings, three in the Copa Del Ray, two in the Spanish Super Cup, and one in the UEFA Champions League. Those 1200 minutes translate roughly to 20 hours, which showcases exactly how much De Jong has been overworked this season.
However, particularly since the misleading rumors about him have started circulating, De Jong has reportedly found a new flame within him. Much more driven and energetic than before, the Barcelona captain seems way too committed at the moment to even be dropped by Xavi.
With a clash against Getafe up next, it seems probable that rotations may take place. While the likes of Pedri and Ilkay Gundogan have been given rest and respite, De Jong has had to weather harsher storms. Now, however, there is still no certainty over whether or not the Dutchman is finally given a breather against Getafe.
Whatever the case may be, Xavi will need to plan ahead with it. While Getafe may not be the highest ranking of opponents, they have been particularly detrimental to Barça’s progression in the past. Taking them seriously will be crucial for Barcelona, and the Catalan side will definitely need a player like De Jong to help out.
