FC Barcelona never seem to be able to get away from dreaded news as much as they would hope. The ongoing campaign in 2023 has already caused the Catalan giants a fair deal of inconvenience and problems already. However, it seems that Barcelona are only set to receive even more bad news.

Heading into January, La Blaugrana already have a pretty stacked list of sidelined players. Gavi was a key casualty, and his injury sees him stay away from action for the entire season. Marc Andre Ter Stegen, Inigo Martinez, and Marcos Alonso all remain injured as well at the time of writing.

However, the latest casualty was that of midfield prodigy Pedri. The 21-year-old remains one of the most important pieces within Barcelona, but his injury record is quite worrying for the club. Moreover, it seems his time away from action is set to be longer than was previously expected.

According to Mundo Deportivo, Pedri is now likely to miss almost the entirety of January. Previous reports had claimed that the date for his return would be sometime right before the Spanish Super Cup came around. Now, however, the trip to Saudi Arabia can almost completely be ruled out for him.

Instead, Barcelona now hope to have their star midfielder back in action before the start of February. They expect him to be available in time for the latter stages of the Copa Del Ray as well as be available for the UEFA Champions League knockout stages.

Despite their planned and executed preventive measures, Pedri’s injury record continues to persist. Barcelona are unable to help their youngster find his best form of fitness again, and it has been quite damaging for them.

In actuality, the report claims that the latest injury is also linked to the same muscle that he has long since had a problem with.

With Pedri and Gavi both injured, Xavi’s options are left quite limited. Frenkie De Jong, Ilkay Gundogan, and Oriol Romeu are still present as midfield options, but they do not scream of having the same quality. Perhaps La Liga’s reportedly relaxed measures for the January transfer window can help Barça find a capable alternative.
