Sergio Busquets’ departure from FC Barcelona at the end of the last season left the club looking for another midfielder who could do a satisfactory job to replace the former captain in the squad, which was almost an impossible task given his unique abilities and skillset.

After contemplating several names, Barcelona ultimately decided to bet on one of their former players, Oriol Romeu. Romeu had graduated from La Masia and made his debut at Barcelona before going on a circuit of Europe and then coming back to his boyhood club for this season from Girona.

Barcelona remain interested in Real Betis midfielder

Another name that was being considered by Barcelona for this position was the Argentine midfielder, Guido Rodrigues. While whispers of his arrival at Barcelona ended with Romeu’s signing, his association with Barcelona has still not ended, and as previously reported here, Barcelona still have him in their sights.

Rodrigues’ contract with Real Betis will end at the conclusion of this season, and this fact makes him a highly suitable candidate for Barcelona. If their situation with FFP allows, Barcelona can bring forward his incorporation to the coming winter window, as Real Betis would be open to selling him if they are unable to convince him for renewal.

Rodrigues talks about his renewal

Real Betis played against Cadiz in their last league match and saw Rodrigues score an acrobatic goal to help the Verdiblancos finish the match with a draw. As SPORT has reported, the player himself spoke to the media about his contractual situation after the match:

“We are in conversations, as the president explained. It was a busy summer, and now we are in a period of tranquility.”

“In a few months, we will talk, but we are in constant conversations with the club. They know what I want, and I believe we understand each other.”

Thus, his latest comments hint that the player and his club are yet to arrive at an agreement for his renewal. The Blaugranes will be monitoring more developments in this regard with great interest as this can help the club land a highly competent midfielder without paying any fee for him.
