FC Barcelona continue to have a plethora of stars at their disposal this season. While the club may have issues in identifying their depth in some areas, they still have outstanding depth in others. One of those regions just so happens to be the midfield for Barcelona.
This season, Barcelona have a great abundance of midfielders at their disposal. In fact, the quality of players is so high that some of the other midfielders in the team barely get a chance to feature.
It is no wonder that the likes of Lamine Yamal and Pau Cubarsi have featured in the attack and defense respectively, but not even the most talented youngsters are able to catch a break in Barça’s talented midfield. Moreover, even a veteran like Oriol Romeu is having a hard time doing that.
Since his arrival from Girona in the summer, the 32-year-old has been massively inconsistent. At this point, he is barely used by Xavi in games except for cup ties most of the times. For this exact reason, as highlighted by Sercan Dikme, Romeu may be close to leaving Barcelona in January.
Turkish side Besiktas have reportedly made a formal offer for the Barcelona midfielder already, as per the report. They believe that he could be a useful addition to their team. Moreover, seeing that Xavi barely counts on his presence, they see this as an opportunity.
With 14 appearances in La Liga this season, the stats on the face of it do not do justice to Romeu’s irrelevance. Mostly just on the bench, he is mainly used as a substitute very late into the games. Even on the off occasions that he has played, he has not left particularly good sensations.
At times, whenever Romeu has performed well, it has not been sustainable. Instead, it seems like an irregularity in his patterns if he does end up playing up to the standards that Barcelona expect of him.
Initially brought in as a replacement for Sergio Busquets as the team’s pivot, it’s safe to say things have not gone to plan. While he was only a budget signing worth close to €3 million, there were still some expectations. His initial outings were promising, but it has only gone downhill since.
His departure in January could thus become a reality. Dikme has reported that negotiations are already underway, and given how Xavi does not count on him, his departure could be easy to see materialize.
