It becomes easy for a player at Barcelona to lose sight of their purpose due to the competition. Given how many talented players there are at the club, not everyone gets an equal opportunity. For this reason, Barcelona does not remain an accessible option for each hopeful player.
Consequently, this made a recent report feel quite believable. Over the last few days, updates from Turkey have suggested that Turkish side Beşiktaş is interested in incorporating a certain Barcelona midfielder. The player in question was none other than 32-year-old Oriol Romeu.
Due to his lack of minutes and prominence, he began to be linked to a move away from the club. Given how replaceable he seemed in Xavi’s plans, this news garnered quite a lot of attention as being a credible one. However, SPORT has recently provided quite the contradictory update.
As per their update, Oriol Romeu is not at all enticed by a move to Turkey. Instead, his hope remains to continue playing for Barcelona and completing this season with La Blaugrana. Despite his decreased prominence in the team, he has faith that he can turn his own situation around.
For him, the Besiktas proposal holds no merit enough to influence his departure. Moreover, SPORT reports that not even Xavi is willing to part ways with the former Girona player. Having arrived in the summer for €3.5 million, he still serves a purpose as a backup midfielder in the team.
Furthermore, knowing the poor consistency of his players when it comes to injuries, Xavi knows that Romeu could be useful at a given point. With Ilkay Gundogan now especially aged, it is clear that the German will need rest from time to time. However, there is also no financial benefit to losing Romeu.
Given that he earns no substantial amount compared to the other more lucrative contracts of his teammates, losing Romeu would not generate significant salary space either. For this reason, it becomes much more viable for Barcelona to simply stick with him for now.
