FC Barcelona are currently in the midst of dealing with multiple ongoing contractual situations and player futures that need to be sorted. The Catalan club has advanced negotiations with some, and have sent proposals to others. One of the primary names in this conversation remains that of Sergio Busquets.
Barcelona’s renewal proposal:
The Barcelona captain was sent a renewal proposal on the 15th of March 2023, as per the reports of Mundo Deportivo. The international break in between that date and today has allowed the player to ponder his future and reflect. He continues to study the proposals at his table and refers to the pros and cons of each destination.
Initially, the wait to receive a proposal from Barcelona was daunting, as they claimed to wish to renew him but seemed to take no initiative. Now with the offer in front of him, Busquets and his entourage believe its conditions do not adequately reflect his importance and ‘weight’ within the club and dressing room. Reportedly, the player still does not have a definitive answer as to where he will play next season and the Catalan club is waiting for that final decision.
Other Proposals:
The current proposals that the player has are mainly from the United States and Saudi Arabia apart from the one he has from Barcelona. The offer made by the Catalans more or less follows a similar set of financial terms such as the one Sergi Roberto received entailing a very low salary.
On the other hand, the offers from the USA and Saudi Arabia are much more lucrative in terms of a financial perspective. The Barcelona midfielder has already had negotiations with the likes of Inter Miami from the MLS and continues to prefer the option of heading to the USA over the offers from the middle east.
A probable additional reason to this is the possibility of ex-teammate Lionel Messi also potentially joining Inter Miami and being reunited with Busquets there. However, with rumors spiraling about Leo Messi possibly returning to Barcelona, there may still be some temptation of staying at Barcelona for Busquets consequently.
Current Barcelona situation:
The current situation with financial fair play makes it difficult for Barcelona to adhere to the most economical demands that Busquets may have regarding his contract, as the current contracts of Gavi and Ronald Araujo are also yet to be finalized in terms of registration. Moreover, the added pressure of needing to cut down the current wage bill by a substantial amount makes matters even more difficult.
Whatever the situation may be, it remains conclusive that Barcelona and Busquets will need to continue negotiations to try to find a resolution that ends up benefitting both parties and adheres to their respective complications.
