Barcelona midfielder prioritizing renewal amid lucrative offers

Sergio Busquets’ departure from Barcelona was seemingly imminent a few weeks ago, as his physical decline was increasingly being seen as a problem keeping the team from evolving into a modern style high-intensity project. However, this has changed since the Qatar World Cup and Xavi’s changed approach to the lineup.

Recent reports from SPORT claim that Sergio Busquets wants to remain at Barcelona, and while previously he was mentally prepared for a parting of ways with the club, he is more optimistic about his chances of staying since the last month or so.

The major shift that may also influence Busquets’ decision to remain at the club is the change of formation from a 3-man forward line to a 4-man midfield by Xavi, which has been successful in the last couple of matches, allowing Barcelona to come away with important wins, including one against Real Madrid that won them the Supercopa de Espana.

In this changed scheme, Busquets feels more protected from the constant pressure of opposition players, as he has more outlets to pass the ball to, and his defensive duties are also more diffused among the 3 other midfielders.

As a result, most of the weaknesses of his game are minimized, while this scheme also allows Xavi to make the most of Busquets’ unique strengths. Thus, SPORT reports that the Catalan club may be willing to offer him a contract renewal for a year, but may still significantly cut down on his wages.

Another factor favoring Busquets’ stay in Catalonia is the financial condition of FC Barcelona, which makes it clear to the club that retaining Busquets in the center of the midfield would be the best possible option financially for the club.

Still, nothing is clear for now. Busquets was reportedly close to joining the MLS a few months ago, while news were also rife of him getting an offer from Saudi club Al-Nasr FC as per the reports of Mundo Deportivo. His entourage is still in contact with possible destinations for the experienced midfielder, in case his renewal with Barcelona does not materialize.
