FC Barcelona officially unveiled their new sporting structure at the club yesterday, which will be headed by Deco. Having gotten over the formalities of introducing the new sporting team at the club, the Catalans will now be looking forward to fulfilling the goals they have set for themselves.

As already reported here, one of the foremost aims for Deco and his sporting department in the short term is the renewal of Xavi Hernandez.

Barcelona on track to renew Xavi

The latest update on this operation has been provided by Mundo Deportivo, which reports that Deco confirmed the renewal of Xavi yesterday. The report further mentions that everything is going in the right direction in this regard, and the Catalans are on course to extend the contract of Xavi and his entire technical staff till June 2025.

Deco on Xavi

Deco worked as an external advisor to Laporta before taking up his responsibilities as the club’s Director of Football. The Portuguese has revealed that he agreed with the decision made by Laporta to get rid of Koeman and appoint Xavi in his stead:

“When the president made the decision for Xavi, I congratulated him. We needed time and tranquility to build a team, and Xavi was going to give us that.”

Deco was also satisfied with Xavi’s work up to now and believed that he deserves an extension: “Xavi has earned the renewal through his work, not just because he’s Xavi.”

Like several Barcelona players, Deco is also eyeing the Champions League as one of the club’s objectives this season:

“Winning the Champions League won’t be in his contract, but it’s clear that it’s one of the objectives. We want to win it again. We are on the right track; we have built a competitive and balanced squad.”

Lastly, Deco also commented on his relationship with Xavi: “We were teammates as players; he knows how to coach, and I know about management.”

Thus, with Deco in charge, Barcelona are looking set to conclude the extension of Xavi until 2025. This season will hopefully be full of titles and victories for Barcelona and help the Catalan club get back to its position of glory in Europe.
