FC Barcelona significantly strengthened their already strong squad during the last transfer window, and Xavi now has almost all of his positions in the team covered by effective replacements.
However, one area of the team is somewhat thin currently and has only one specialist available, i.e., the midfield pivot. Xavi only has Oriol Romeu for this position, and there is no other player in the current team who plays naturally in the pivot position.
Barcelona not considering a new acquisition in winter window
The Catalans are conscious of their weakness in this specific area, and Deco and his team are already monitoring several players who can play in this position. However, Mundo Deportivo reports that Barcelona are not considering the acquisition of a midfielder for this position in the winter window, particularly because of their problems with FFP.
The report claims that Barcelona would act to get a midfielder mainly in the next summer window and undertake an operation in the winter only if a great opportunity arises. For now, the priority for the club in January is to bring in Vitor Roque from Brazil.
Several options being monitored by Barcelona
Among the several players that Barcelona are monitoring for this position is Guido Rodriguez, who currently plays with Real Betis but has his contract with the Verdiblancos ending at the end of this season.
At 31 years of age, he is a great opportunity for Barcelona, but the Catalans are not contemplating a move for him in January.
The same is true also for Arthur Vermeeren, the Royal Antwerp midfielder on Barcelona’s radars, and Sergi Altimira, another player from Real Betis whom Barcelona likes but who is not yet considered to be on the top level.
Gabriel Moscardo is another midfielder who has been strongly linked with Barcelona recently, especially with Deco being an admirer of him. However, Barcelona are not seriously considering a move for him either in January. Andrey Santos, who is currently owned by Chelsea but is playing on loan at Nottingham Forest, is also not being preferred.
