There is no doubt within Barcelona that future signings are essential for the club. Instead of relying on the old guard and seasoned veterans to carry the Barcelona legacy forward, the club needs a new set of faces to help the Catalan giants make their mark in the new era.
One of the key positions that needs a change in order to facilitate this modernized version of football is the pivot position. The club’s central defensive midfield position has become a key part of any Barcelona side irrespective of the manager.
However, it is Xavi Hernandez who is currently in charge of La Blaugrana. In his eyes, the position needs a certain player to help revitalize it. This particular player is someone quite different from Oriol Romeu, with the veteran not being seen as any sort of a long-term asset.
The player in question is none other than Martin Zubimendi. Not even 25 years of age just yet, the Spaniard is a great desire of Xavi’s. Despite previous failed attempts, SPORT believes that Barcelona will make another one in the summer of 2024.
By that point, Zubimendi would have fulfilled his Champions League dream with Real Sociedad. Moreover, as per SPORT, La Real are already mindful of the fact that Barcelona could look to snatch him away from them. As such, a hunt for a Zubimendi replacement is also in the works.
In terms of the financial muscle required for such an operation, Barcelona will need to put in extra effort. Having a fixed release clause worth €60 million, Zubimendi has a price attached to him that Barcelona will have to be very careful with when proceeding towards it.
Financial fair play will ultimately be the great decider for Barcelona and their hopes. To make it work, Xavi and Barça are willing to make sacrifices. Stylistically, there is no player in world football that the Barcelona coach would have replace Busquets than the La Real midfielder.
