There is a future at FC Barcelona for some players, but the same future is not there for others. The Catalan club remains a competitive entity, and thus needs players who are able to compete at the highest level. This may not be fruitful for many individuals, but Barcelona can not take the risk either.
Such players have to eventually end up moving away from the club to find their purpose again. Some players manage to do so, while others succumb to the pressure from before and continue to fade away. A certain Barcelona fullback faced a similar hurdle, but he has managed to create something special.
Sergino Dest, aged 23, left Barcelona to embark on a loan journey that gives him back his mojo. As highlighted by SPORT, that is exactly what he has found over in the Dutch league with PSV. His long-forgotten spark from his time at Ajax seems to have been rekindled, and has come in a new position for him.
Now capable of excelling as a left-back as well, Dest has regained his versatility that set him apart. Even against Arsenal on matchday 6 in the UEFA Champions League, a certain moment of magic from him went viral.
It is through an accumulation of such moments that many realize just how key of a player the American fullback can be when he plays with the right mindset.
However, this revitalized version of Dest poses both a problem and a solution for Barcelona. The Catalan club is on the lookout for assets to sell that would bring in some much-needed financial injections. Dest could prove to be such an asset, but his buy option is only worth €10 million as per reports.
With PSV now looking keen to pay that amount, it is a good bonus for Barcelona. However, his market value has since surged, and by sitting at a more valuable €20 million, Barça would ideally like to receive more than what is likely to arrive in the form of a financial compensation.
Moreover, with Xavi set to depart in the summer, Dest could have an opportunity to return to Barcelona as well. The Spanish coach was not too fond of the American, and perhaps with his departure, the fullback sees a brighter future for himself. Whatever the case may be, there is currently no guarantee about where Dest ends up next season.
