While the last season was a successful one for FC Barcelona as a whole, there are some players in the club’s squad for whom the season was not so great. One such player is Eric Garcia, who saw his involvement in games significantly reduced during the last season.
According to Diario AS, the Catalan giants are open to selling the Catalan center-back this summer and would be willing to let him go for €10 million. Inter Milan have been reported to be interested in the player. His sale would not surprise Barcelona supporters, as his role has largely been that of a bench-warmer in the last season.
The Spaniard played a total of 32 games for the club last season. While this number is good for most professional footballers, the whole context of Garcia’s situation shows how his position has worsened over the last season.
In the 2021-2022 campaign, Garcia played an important role in Xavi’s system and was also an important part of Luis Enrique’s Spain team. However, he has lost his prominence in both these teams.
Of the 32 appearances that he made for FC Barcelona, he started only 18 and played the full 90 minutes in only 11 of these matches. His total minutes on the pitch sum up only to 1800, which translates into 20 full matches.
This is keeping in view the highly demanding season that Barcelona had, where the club also had to use one of its two starting center-backs, either Kounde or Araujo, to cover the right-back position. The starting center-backs for the club also saw some time out with injuries.
Even when Xavi was without his preferred center-backs, he preferred using Marcos Alonso, and Garcia was used only when Xavi intended to rest his regular starters. Garcia’s position is expected to deteriorate further with Inigo Martinez’s arrival this summer, and thus, a sale in this upcoming transfer window makes sense for both the club and the player.
