In the last summer transfer window, one of the positions that FC Barcelona were expected to invest in was that of the midfield pivot. However, despite being linked with the likes of Amadou Onana and Mikel Merino, the Blaugranes were unable to incorporate any new midfield pivot, mainly because of their problems with FFP.

As a result, Hansi Flick had to rely on academy prospects to cover for this position. First, it was Marc Bernal who impressed the German tactician during the team’s pre-season tour of the USA. He was the starting midfield pivot for Barcelona at the start of the season, but his ACL injury derailed a highly promising season for him.

Since then, Marc Casado has proven himself to be up to the task of holding this position, and he has also been playing at a very high level in the last few games.

However, if media reports are to be believed, Barcelona are still keeping an eye on the possible candidates in the market who can play in this position, as SPORT reports that the Catalan club is one of the candidates for the signing of the Chelsea midfielder Enzo Fernandez, who is not having a very good season in London.

The London side bought the Argentine in January 2023 for a record transfer fee of €121 million after Fernandez had impressed with Benfica and the Argentine national team, winning the 2022 World Cup with the latter.

However, he has been unable to perform up to his expected standards at the Premier League side, and even the new Chelsea coach, Enzo Maresca, has been unable to get the best out of him.

Things have reached such a low point that he was left on the bench for the last three crunch games against Liverpool, Newcastle, and Manchester United.

Thus, unhappy with this role, Fernandez is already considering a change of scenery, and Barcelona and Inter Milan are reported to be two of his options.

Despite this decline, the €75m-rated Argentine will not come cheap for the Blaugranes. However, they can consider going for his signature if they are able to find a buyer for Frenkie de Jong. Still, they will not go desperate for Enzo, as they are well satisfied with the performances of Casado, and are also counting on Marc Bernal to return next season.
