Barcelona pearl may be given the iconic #10 of Lionel Messi

BARCELONA, SPAIN - MARCH 12: Lamine Yamal of FC Barcelona warms up prior to the UEFA Champions League 2023/24 round of 16 second leg match between FC Barcelona and SSC Napoli at Estadi Olimpic Lluis Companys on March 12, 2024 in Barcelona, Spain.

Few responsibilities even come close to the one of wearing the Blaugrana colors and representing FC Barcelona. The Catalan giants are among the most prestigious clubs in the world, and the obligations are equally demanding. For players to succeed at Barcelona, they truly have to be a special breed of quality.

However, even within Barcelona, there is a milestone and responsibility that very few are able to reach and fulfill. In fact, even reaching it is a far stretch, most of the contenders do not even manage to make a dent in the projection or pathway that is expected of them.

The milestone and responsibility in question, perhaps the biggest in Barcelona, is taking on the mantle of Barça’s fabled number 10.

Adorned by the likes of Lionel Messi, Ronaldinho, Diego Maradona, Rivaldo, and other greats, the number 10 is more than just a kit number. It represents leadership, and otherworldly qualities as a footballer and beyond, and very few have truly managed to wear it and deliver.

Now, as per SPORT, there finally may be a new contender up for the task. This contender, currently aged just 16, is being discussed within the club as being the player who is given this responsibility in the upcoming season. The player in question is obviously none other than the extremely talented Lamine Yamal.

A player who transcends the shackles of his tender age, he continues to amaze and astound. His recent performance against Napoli was no different from the ones that have hailed him as the elite winger that he is, and he continues to dominate even the most seasoned of veterans trying to stop him.

Many have compared him directly to Lionel Messi, and he now even wears the boots of the line based on his Barcelona predecessor as he is partnered up with Adidas. His play style and ability to unsettle defenses have also resulted in comparisons being drawn, but Yamal is his own kind of player, just like the great Lionel Messi was as well.

However, there are also some voices within the club that are opposed to this. As per the report, certain names within the club believe that piling on such a responsibility on the young pearl could be detrimental to his progression and development, and a name from the past whose talents went to waste also comes to mind as a result

Ansu Fati, Barça’s last great ray of hope, was also brave enough to take on this challenge once. His time, despite its teasing promises, was short-lived and not as fruitful. Injuries plagued him and his career has definitely not gone in the most positive of directions since. Yet, if Yamal continues to play as he is doing, there is no question that he too has great heights to reach.
