Barcelona planning to sell ‘Barca TV’ to generate more funds

Barça TV is the official channel of FC Barcelona

Barcelona have been facing problems with La Liga’s wage cap for some seasons now and also faced a penalty recently for their wage bill transgressions. It was reported in the starting days of January that La Liga has fined FC Barcelona €800,000 for breaching Financial Fair Play rules.

However, more problems await the club in this regard, as La Liga has consistently refused to recognize the new contract that Barcelona has finalized with Gavi. In view of all these and potential new problems, the club executives are mulling over a new source of a one-time windfall for the club.

According to the program Què T’hi Jugues, the club hierarchy is considering selling Barca TV. The club believes reducing the wage bill will be the only possible way in which they can satisfy La Liga. Any other ordinary income would not be enough to bring any significant changes that can allow the club to fulfil its targeted transfer operations for the current and upcoming summer transfer window.

However, selling the long-time asset of Barca TV is still being considered for two main reasons. Firstly, to obtain some much-needed financial relief. And secondly, to shed off an asset that is currently generating losses for the club.

While this sale could ultimately be a profitable instance of business for the club, the selling of long-time assets would certainly not go down too well with the fans. Still, it needs to be recognized that the current financial turmoil at the club, and the added pressure by La Liga, leaves very little room for manoeuvring for the club decision makers.
