Barcelona constantly remain in the hunt for prodigious talents that can be found across Europe and beyond. The likes of Pedri, Ronald Araujo, and others have come to the Catalan club as a result of splendid scouting.
However, in their case, the young stars of today came at very reasonable prices for Barcelona back then. Given the current economic state of the club, those are the ideal types of transfers that La Blaugrana can pursue.
Keeping in touch with that philosophy, Barcelona continue to scout the market even today for such opportunities. Their latest target seems to currently be playing his football in Germany.
However, while their interest in this particular player has been reported several times over the past, it has now possibly been confirmed by one of the most reliable sources in world football.
Eyes on Wirtz
According to Italian journalist Fabrizio Romano, Barcelona could be one of the clubs most keen on a particular German wonderkid. The player in question is none other than 20-year-old attacking midfielder Florian Wirtz.
Currently a player for Bayer Leverkusen, Romano has indirectly hinted in a recent video that Barcelona could potentially be keeping tabs on the youngster:
“Top clubs from Spain, England, and Germany are keeping an eye on Florian Wirtz.”
Through this statement, Romano confirms Spanish interest in the player. In terms of the influence and pedigree of potential destinations, FC Barcelona and Real Madrid stand out. Interestingly enough, however, the youngster has previously even acknowledged his admiration for the Catalan giants.
Possible contenders
Fabrizio Romano further stated that the player could become a major name in the transfer window of 2024. The summer of next year could prove to be the one in which the German wonderkid finally makes a move outside of the Bundesliga.
Clubs like Real Madrid, Bayern Munich, and Manchester City are just a few potential competitors that Barcelona will have to remain mindful of.
This season, Wirtz has already scored 5 goals and provided 8 assists in 13 appearances across all competitions. Moreover, despite having just come back from an extensive recovery period, the player continues to play at his best level.
Valued at €85 million with a contract expiring in 2027, Wirtz will definitely be an expensive target. In terms of the funds required for such an operation, Barcelona would have to do something significant.
