In recent reports concerning FC Barcelona and their transfer window, a number of different names have been associated with the club. Among those names are players from the various European leagues, and the players in question are typically all of varying play styles and attributes.

Over the last couple of reports, the name of Portuguese midfielder Ruben Neves has been brought into light quite a bit. The 26-year-old midfielder currently plies his trade for English Premier League side Wolverhampton Wanderers, commonly known as Wolves, and primarily occupies the defensive midfielder role at the club.

As the departure of Sergio Busquets has become official, Barcelona are in dire need of a replacement at the central defensive position. Whereas the arrival of Ilkay Gundogan remains a strong possibility, the German international would not be occupying a role akin to that of what Busquets used to.

Despite reports suggesting Neves is a strong candidate for the soon-to-be vacant defensive midfielder position, revelations from SPORT report that to be untrue and that there exists another alternative to the Portuguese player.

As per the Spanish news outlet, the sporting sector and technical heads at the club believe that Ruben Neves just isn’t the correct profile for FC Barcelona and particularly Xavi Hernandez’s squad. Instead, they would much rather prefer the arrival of Moroccan defensive midfielder, Sofyan Amrabat.

The 26-year-old Moroccan currently plies his trade for Serie A side Fiorentina and impressed remarkably at the 2022 FIFA World Cup stage during his country’s dream run to the semi-finals. Xavi and his coaching staff believe him to be the correct choice moving forward rather than investing in Neves.

Given the financial demands of Fiorentina however, it remains to be seen just how well FC Barcelona are able to formalize an agreement that stays within their restrictions of Financial Fairplay, and how capable they are of adjusting the potential signing of Amrabat with their other transfer priorities.
