Barcelona president confirms advanced price talks with Man City for fullback

BARCELONA, SPAIN - APRIL 17: FC Barcelona President Joan Laporta gives a press conference in response to recent allegations over payments made to referees by the club, at Spotify Camp Nou on April 17, 2023 in Barcelona, Spain. UEFA and Spanish authorities are investigating Barcelona over the payment of millions of euros to the company of Jose Maria Enriquez Negreira, the former vice-president of Spanish football's refereeing committee. If found guilty, UEFA's investigation could lead to a Champions League ban for the club.

FC Barcelona need to sort out their summer plans ahead of time at this point. The Catalan giants can no longer afford the luxury of making spontaneous decisions as they used to. In terms of financial allowance, Barcelona can not take any unnecessary risks.

Thus, everything must be predefined for the Catalan giants if they are to ensure stability. Players that are to be brought in, as well as sent outwards, must be on a planned list that is predetermined ahead of time. For now, it seems that two players enjoy the luxury of being on Barça’s guaranteed wish list.

Both Joao Felix and Joao Cancelo are wanted by Barcelona, where they are currently on loan. La Blaugrana believe them to be the right investments for the near and medium term. However, the case of one of them is much more advanced than the other’s as per the president of FC Barcelona.

According to Joan Laporta, as highlighted by SPORT, Joao Cancelo’s operation currently has much more clarity:

“Their cases are quite similar, but the operation with Cancelo is much more advanced in terms of price, with Joao Félix the price is not quite defined yet and we are waiting. We want Joao to stay at Barça, he has exceptional talent, and we also want Cancelo to stay, he has become a regular starter.”

However, that does not mean that Laporta has given up on Felix either. For the Barcelona president, the continuity for both players is on the table, and various formulas are being studied to ensure their continuity:

“We are willing for both to continue, either through a loan formula with a fixed purchase price or to continue under the same conditions we currently have with their respective clubs.”

However, with the limited resources that they have, Barcelona must tread carefully. Options that are financially viable and do not jeopardize Barça’s economic health are the only ones that should be entertained. Yet, given Laporta’s ambitious nature, there is no telling what happens in the summer for Barcelona.
