The priority at FC Barcelona to bring in a new central defensive midfielder and to reinforce certain other priority positions remains intact and is consistently being worked upon by the club and its sporting sector.
With the given circumstances in terms of finances however, Barcelona are struggling to cope with the demand of wishing to bring in a top-level pivot that would also understandably be an expensive operator to conduct, something that Barca believes at the moment to be unfeasible.
The club has thus come to believe that in the scenario that a new pivot does not end up arriving, the squad already has a number of alternatives to rely upon and even many specialists in the youth team that can be looked towards to make a difference.
This was particularly emphasized upon by club President Joan Laporta, who stated in an interview with La Vanguardia, as highlighted by Mundo Deportivo, that Barcelona manager Xavi Hernandez should look towards the players they do possess first and foremost, stating:
“….We would cut the progression of the quarry. We have Marc Casadó, Pau Prim, Gerard Hernández or Marc Bernal. First, you have to look at home…”
The president also remarked that Xavi is well aware of the economic situation of the club and that he understands the limitations in place:
“…He understands the situation of the club. He would like to reinforce the center of the field, but he knows that some options are unfeasible and we would be wrong…”
Given Barcelona’s reported ongoing pursuit of Girona’s midfielder Oriol Romeu still in execution, it remains to be seen whether or not the Blaugrana club actually ends up making it a finalized transfer.
On the contrary, if the transfer doesn’t come through, the words of Laporta may end up echoing what’s to come, with Xavi needing to rely on available or homegrown talent to fill the void left behind by Barcelona legend Sergio Busquets, who played his final season with La Blaugrana this year already.
