After having renewed the contracts of important players like Alejandro Balde and the head coach Xavi, FC Barcelona are now looking to get another contract renewed, that of the midfielder Frenkie de Jong.
De Jong still has some years left in his current contract, which runs till 2026. However, the Catalans are still looking to renew his contract further to keep him tied with the club even beyond these years.
De Jong’s renewal a priority for Barcelona
The Spanish publication SPORT reports that this operation is the top priority for Barcelona right now, as they are looking to protect the player’s future with the club and also to come to an agreement with him to distribute part of his salary for the coming years.
Frenkie de Jong is a very important player for the club, an invaluable asset whom the Catalans do not want to lose any time soon. The Blaugrane officials realize that De Jong has a lot of suitors in the market but are not too worried about this aspect as the player has never wanted to leave despite some highly convincing offers and his loyalty to the club is beyond any doubt.
FC Barcelona are now trying to renew his contract till 2029, and the club wants to let it known to the midfielder that they want him to spend his entire senior playing career with the Catalans. The new contract offer is a sign of this intent.
Salary spread over more years
However, De Jong will have to make an effort himself too. He currently has the highest salary in the squad, primarily because of the salary differences coming from the pandemic years. He renewed his contract in 2026 by lowering his salary, but this lost amount was to be paid to him in the coming years, and this setup makes his salary for the coming two years highly disproportionate to the market.
Barcelona are not looking for De Jong to lose this money but want these payments to be spread over even more years. Convincing De Jong can be difficult because of his history of disagreement over the Manchester United move, but Deco wants to complete the negotiations for this operation before the year ends.
