It appears that the financial limitations in the world of football apply to clubs beyond just Barcelona. The Catalan club has been infamously restricted by the applications of La Liga’s financial fair play limitations and this has restricted their business in various transfer windows.
However, Barcelona have managed to remain competitive by working around those limitations. By utilizing loan deals and low-cost signings, Barcelona have managed to remain sustainable.
On the other, Manchester City is another side that has thus far not exactly been limited in terms of their spending. However, as Mundo Deportivo reports, the latest updates within England do not seem too promising for the reigning European champions.
As the report states, the Cityzens are currently under heavy investigation in terms of breaching financial fair play rules. By making an example of Everton’s recent 10-point deduction, it is assumed that City’s penalty could be far more treacherous.
With this knowledge of City having potentially breached “115” rules of financial fair play, they now have been given a reminder of urgency. Making sales in January is becoming more and more of a probable decision as a result.
For Barcelona, this comes as great news. The Blaugranes believe that the continuity of both their Portuguese stars, Joao Felix and Cancelo, is essential to their future. In Cancelo’s case, they would have to negotiate with Manchester City.
With Barcelona hoping to seal the signing of both players in January, this latest update of bad news for City works in their favor. At the moment, it is understood that Cancelo’s parent club wants €25 million for his transfer.
On the other hand, FC Barcelona are only willing to pay up to a maximum of €15 million. Given the issue with financial fair play, City may have to negotiate a value in between or at Barça’s insistence. Other players within the side are also not safe from this peculiar fate.
For Manchester City, Cancelo remains a contracted player until 2027. However, the final verdict on their infringement of fair play rules is expected to come in 2025 at the latest.
