With Gavi out with an ACL tear for the rest of the season, FC Barcelona need to incorporate another midfielder into the squad. In fact, Deco and his staff are already looking at several players to replace Gavi, but will first have to ensure a significant cash injection into the club before they can finalize a move.
However, the Catalans will incorporate a player only if he can make a significant sporting contribution to the club while having wages that are in line with the Club’s economic reality.
This is clear from a recent report from Mundo Deportivo, which claims that the agent of the English midfielder, Jordan Henderson, offered the player to FC Barcelona, but the Catalans ruled out his signing despite being in search of a midfielder.
Henderson left Liverpool to join the Saudi Arabian club Al-Ettifaq last summer. However, his chapter in the Middle East did not last long, as he looked to return to Europe. He signed with Ajax for two years a few days ago.
However, before signing for Ajax, the midfielder offered himself to several other major European clubs, including Borussia Dortmund, Bayern Munich, and Barcelona. The former Liverpool player knew that Barcelona were looking for a midfielder, and thus offered himself. However, the midfielder did not meet Barcelona’s economic or sporting criteria.
Ajax have paid a €1.5 million signing bonus to the player, in addition to a net €3.2 million annual salary. Juventus was another possible option for Henderson, but the player wanted to play and live closer to Manchester, the city where his family lives.
Jurgen Klopp had once described the midfielder as “exceptional, outstanding”, but it is clear that the Englishman is now on the twilight of his career, and Barcelona would be looking for a younger option.
Thus, Ajax emerged as a good option for the Englishman, and Barcelona continue with their search for another midfielder in January.
