With the economic difficulties that the club is facing and the need to strengthen the team going into the next season, a lot of departures and arrivals are expected at FC Barcelona in the coming few months.
As things stand, Barcelona will have to sell some of their players if they want to bring other new high-profile players into the squad. In the last few days, one of the players who has been linked with a move away from the club is the midfielder Frenkie de Jong.
As already reported here, Barcelona have already offered a contract renewal to the Dutchman, with the new contract going up to 2029, but offering lesser wages than what Frenkie is earning today.
His current contract also goes up to 2026, and if the midfielder does not accept the new contract, Barcelona will be open to letting him leave.
However, this exit will come on Barcelona’s terms, and according to Mundo Deportivo, the club has decided to let Frenkie leave only if an offer of around €100 million comes for him.
This amount may seem hefty, but is in line with what some Premier League clubs have paid for midfielders less competent and known than Frenkie de Jong.
For example, Chelsea paid €115 million for Moises Caicedo and €121 for Enzo Fernandez. Barcelona believe that a Premier League side can pay such a sum for the Dutchman, with Chelsea and Manchester United the most likely interested teams.
Manchester City has yet to enter the race for the 26-year-old Dutch midfield maestro. However, the Citizens were interested in him in 2019, with Pep Guardiola personally calling him to convince him to join the Blues.
He joined from Ajax in the summer of 2019 for a fixed fee of €75 million, with an additional €11 million in variables, amid much higher aspirations and expectations.
However, in his four and a half seasons with the club, he has only secured a League title (2022-23), a Copa del Rey (2020-21), and a Spanish Super Cup (2023).
