The challenges that FC Barcelona have faced in recent transfer windows have highlighted their limitations. Despite still holding a lot of prestige and honor as a club, the financial restrictions are still a massive hurdle to overcome. Without the finances to back their interests in today’s market, Barcelona simply cannot compete against other top clubs.
However, at times good opportunities can present themselves in the transfer market and it then becomes a matter of urgency and efficiency. In such scenarios, Barcelona have shown themselves to be capable of acting swiftly in order to acquire the services of elite talents through more accessible operations.
Even if there does not seem to be an immediate need to bolster specific positions, good opportunities can change such perceptions. At the moment, it appears that Barcelona have now managed to identify yet another transfer target who the club believes could be a great market opportunity.
Alphonso Davies, according to SPORT, is the latest player to join the list of summer transfer targets for Barcelona. The Canadian left-back, currently playing for Bayern Munich, is a player renowned world-wide for his speed and electric playstyle, and Barça seem to believe that he could fit them perfectly due to several reasons.
Firstly, the player has a close connection to the club’s current head coach, Hansi Flick. Having been coached by the new Barcelona coach back when he was at Bayern Munich, the both of them enjoyed great collective success during their time together in Germany. At Barcelona, Flick could be a key figure for Davies to rekindle that version of himself.
Secondly, the player’s current contract is set to expire in the summer of 2025. That would make him a free agent and a player that Barcelona would love to sign given their economic constraints. A player of his quality arriving as a free transfer would be a great move for Joan Laporta, and the Barcelona president really needs great moves right now.
Unfortunately, things will be much easier said than done. Bayern Munich will still be trying to retain the 23-year-old left-back and will look to find a middle ground between the player’s demands and their own offering. Similarly, Real Madrid have been linked to the Canadian fullback since quite some time and they consider him to be a priority target as well.
Moreover, due to the player’s personal demands expected to be high, Barcelona may have to shuffle their resources around as well. Already struggling to juggle their salary limit, La Blaugrana may even have to offload a key player or two if they hope to facilitate Davies in the near future.
