Barcelona set to announce second summer signing on first of July – report

Following the unveiling of Ilkay Gundogan as a new FC Barcelona player, excitement amongst fans was bound to pick up momentum as they look forward to the upcoming season as well as any new signings that the club is going to announce.

Alongside Gundogan, other potential targets are all adding to this excitement. Now, as per Spanish journalist Sergi Capdevila of SPORT, Barcelona will soon be announcing officially their next signing of the season on the 1st of July, the signing is question being none other than current Athletic Bilbao defender Inigo Martinez.

Despite the fact that Martinez was reportedly the very first player Barcelona managed to tie down for the summer window in regards to personal terms, his official announcement has been arguably the most delayed. With the terms with Ilkay Gundogan agreed quite later and yet the German’s transfer being made official prior to Martinez, there were obvious questions over the whole situation.

However, as has previously been confirmed by Catalan journalist Gerard Romero as well, the primary reason why FC Barcelona have been unable to make official the player’s signing is because of his current club Athletic Bilbao, who believe that as long as he is contracted to the Basque club until June 30th, he is very much a player contracted to them and will not be allowed to leave beforehand.

Despite this objection, once the player’s contract officially expires on the 30th of June, Barcelona will reportedly make his signing official the very next day on the 1st of July. The date will become a great occasion for the Catalans, who will have completed their second first team signing of the summer, if things go as reported.
