The worst parts of the summer transfer window seem to be getting even worse for Barcelona. Initially, the Catalan giants had dreamt of signing a new pivot and potentially ensuring the arrival of a new winger as well. Eventually, it became clear that Barcelona wanted to take a different route but that has hardly worked out either.

Previously, Nico Williams had seemingly become the main transfer target for Barcelona this summer. Unfortunately, that desire to sign the Athletic Club winger has not ended up amounting to anything either thus far. As a result of that, Barça have had to turn their attention towards another target.

However, while Dani Olmo may now be getting Barça’s attention, the Catalan giants did end up neglecting another midfield option for a great part of this summer. That option was none other than 28-year-old Mikel Merino, one of the standout performers for both Spain and Real Sociedad.

Now, according to Fabrizio Romano, the player is closer than ever to joining English Premier League outfit Arsenal. While the Gunners have been interested in the player since quite some time, it was initially being reported that he preferred moving to Barça instead.

Some time has passed since then, and it became even more evident that Barcelona were giving priority to other signings before Merino. Due to this, it appears that the Spaniard has now decided to take his services elsewhere to a club that is at least willing to make him feel important and wanted.

As it stands, the Barcelona target has already reportedly agreed personal terms with Arsenal. Moreover, negotiations with Real Sociedad are ongoing and the latest information provided suggests that an offer exceeding the €30 million mark may be sent in by Arsenal and it would be one that the La Liga outfit would be willing to appreciate.
