Barcelona continue to keep a vigilant eye on the transfer market in the hopes of finding an ‘opportunity’. Players with their contracts running out, achievable release clauses, or even promising talents worth investing in are all viable opportunities for Barcelona to consider.
One of the latest such bargains that Barcelona managed to land a finger on was Nico Williams. Currently contracted to Athletic Bilbao, the Spanish winger is a promising prospect. Capable of reaching high speeds, producing creative moments, and possessing deadly dribbling, Williams is a great talent.
Basque prodigy
Despite being just 21 years of age, he is already a fundamental piece of Bilbao’s structure. However, due to news that his contract was soon expiring, many reports began to link FC Barcelona to the talented winger.
While those rumors continued to spread, reality began to kick in. As disappointing as it is for Barcelona, Mundo Deportivo reports that the player is set to soon extend his contract. Planning on staying a little longer with Bilbao, his current contractors have managed to get him on board to sign an extension.
Bilbao takes the hit
However, all hope is not lost just yet. The Basque club, running low on time to renew him, had to give in to certain demands. MD states that players of his age are typically signed on for longer durations to extend. Unlike those instances, Nico Williams will likely just sign a two-year extension with Bilbao.
Valid until 2026 only, by the time Williams will be around 24 years of age, it also has other conditions that do not exactly favor the La Liga club. His €50 million release clause remains intact, with changes potentially only going to be within a €10 million range.
Barcelona connections
Williams continues to develop a strong bond with several Barcelona stars within the Spanish National team. Gavi and Alejandro Balde are two particularly close friends of his within the Spain setup. However, all of them may just have to wait a bit longer to play together in Blaugrana colors.
