Barcelona set to put 22-year-old defender on transfer list – report

The current priorities at FC Barcelona signal that the club would rather bring in a set of midfielders and a secondary striker than sign recruitments in other positions as of this moment.

The potential recruitments for the center-back position are no longer a worry for the Catalan club as they already possessed a surplus of quality and depth in that particular position, especially now that they have added Athletic Bilbao defender Inigo Martinez to that list this summer as well.

Ronald Araujo, Andreas Christensen, Jules Kounde, Marcos Alonso and now Inigo Martinez are all considered viable options at the center-back position for FC Barcelona. Consequently, it does mean that certain players will be provided with even fewer minutes over the course of the next season.

According to the most recent report by SPORT, that player set to be at the bottom of the pile is none other than Spanish center-back Eric Garcia, who arrived in 2021 from English Premier League side Manchester City.

The 22-year-old has had a mixed time at FC Barcelona thus far. Error-prone in general with a particularly unreliable defensive record, the player fell lower and lower down Barcelona’s list of defensive units. Under Koeman, the player maintained some importance, but since the appointment of Xavi Hernandez, it has become more and more evident that he is not in the manager’s plans for the future.

The report suggests that given his arrival as a free transfer from Manchester City, despite the English side offering him a new contract to renew, any sale-based revenue that Barcelona would earn would be considered profitable and it would also allow Barcelona to cut additional salary costs as well through his departure.

As of right now, it appears that the footballer has no intention of parting ways with Barcelona, particularly because he himself made great efforts to sign for the club despite other possibilities.

However, his mind could be changed depending on how he feels regarding the opportunities he may be given elsewhere should a potential offer arrive for his signature and services.

The player was even included by previous Spanish National team manager Luis Enrique to represent his country on various occasions but has since also lost importance within La Roja given his decline in performances and minutes with FC Barcelona.

The club would be thinking of Garcia’s departure as both a sporting and economically sound decision, as the player was even tried out as a pivot but was not a drastic game-changer for the Catalans there either. Now, it remains to be seen what the final decision on Eric Garcia ends up being from the perspectives of both the club and the player.
