Being one of the grandest clubs in Europe, Barcelona is a place full of criticism and wandering eyes. Just like any other elite club in the world, every action regardless of its magnitude that happens in Barcelona will get talked about no matter what.
Recently, a video of Portuguese fullback Joao Cancelo has gone viral. In the video in question, Cancelo is heard being frustrated with a few individuals attempting to force the Barcelona star to stop and take pictures with them as well as interact with them.
The 29-year-old fullback seems visibly distraught and is audible enough to make out how he attempts to tell the individuals off and scold them for always appearing over and over again at the same place.
Now, as the media has begun to throw a poor light on this incident, Cancelo took out time to respond. Previously, the Spanish media made a big deal of how Cancelo was not behaving like a proper role model or even a good public figure.
However, as highlighted by Spanish outlet SPORT, Cancelo has come out on social media to reply to this ongoing viral video and whatever context people may have made up about it, stating the truth about who these people actually were:
“For the stupidity that is written here in comments I have several things to say:
First, they are not fans, they are 20-year-old ‘kids’ who are there every day whether at the gate of the training center or when I am with my daughter in a park or having a simple dinner with my girlfriend.”
He further clarified that these individuals are not just fans but only a bunch of people interested in profiting after pestering these football stars:
“Secondly, they ask for autographs from me on shirts and later sell them. And this repeats every day, and always the same people. There are people who don’t know how to respect each other’s space.”
He lastly took a dig at those criticizing him and asked them to be more aware and open-minded from next time onwards before assuming everything that he or any other person gets involved in:
“For people who criticize, try to know the reality of the fact first and then comment. Because I will always respect the true fans .”
Cancelo is currently away with the Portuguese National team due to the ongoing international break. He will next return to Barcelona when they prepare to face off against Athletic Bilbao at the Montjuic Stadium.
