Having arrived at FC Barcelona in 2022, Robert Lewandowski had a very successful first year in Spain, as he not only won the Spanish Super Cup and La Liga with the rest of the team, but also won one of the most prestigious individual prizes in Spain, the Pichichi.
The Pole had scored 23 La Liga goals that season, and was followed by Real Madrid’s Karim Benzema, who had 19 goals. However, the veteran Barcelona striker had a rather slow start to the current season but was able to recover his form in recent months, and now has 17 goals in the 2023-24 La Liga campaign.
But despite these goals, SPORT notes that the Pichichi title is in danger of slipping out of the Pole’s hand, as he currently has several other players ahead of him in the league goal rankings.
In last night’s game between Real Madrid and Alaves, Jude Bellingham was able to score another goal and take his tally to 19, and thus is only one goal behind the current top-scorer in the league, Girona’s Artem Dovbyk, who has 20 goals to his name.
However, in the match between Girona and Villarreal, a game in which two of the top three scorers in La Liga were competing against each other, neither Dovbyk nor Alexander Sorloth, were able to score.
But this proved to be beneficial for Barcelona in another sense as Girona lost 1-0 and lost further ground to the Blaugranes in the race for second place. Lewandowski will not be in action before Thursday, as Barcelona face Almeria, and would be looking to improve his standing in this Pichichi race.
As things stand, this round proved to be advantageous to Bellingham, as he reduced the distance to the top scorer to a single goal. While Real Madrid have already won La Liga, this Pichichi race can still keep the competition lively for the spectators, and all of these players will be gunning to get their hands on this trophy.
