As the days continue to go by, FC Barcelona continues to lose precious time in the transfer window. La Blaugrana simply cannot afford to have a squad that seems weaker than the one they had last season, and they must turn that situation around soon. However, with Barcelona having some massive restrictions, it feels complicated.
Yet, all hope is not lost as the Catalan club continues to sort out their finances in whatever way they possibly can. First came the departure of Ilkay Gundogan to Manchester City with the hopes of freeing up precious salary space, and the most recent departure to be reported is that of Mikayil Faye to Rennes FC.
However, not everything that Barcelona will do from here on out will be about exits. Instead, the club wants to reinforce the team by bringing in some much-needed recruits. The fullback position, for instance, is one that the club reportedly want a new arrival for.
According to Mundo Deportivo, the man that the club still wants for that position is Joao Cancelo. The 30-year-old Manchester City fullback spent last season on loan at FC Barcelona and managed to impress the people at the club with his professionalism and quality on the pitch.
Even now, despite some blunders from the player in the last stages of the campaign, Barcelona still counts on Cancelo as being their first priority. Despite being linked to young Almeria fullback Marc Pubil recently, Barcelona continues to give priority to the Portuguese fullback with proven quality and experience that spreads across several top European leagues.
Even with other options and targets on the table, Barcelona and Hansi Flick continue to value Cancelo’s option. His technicality, vision, offensive contributions, and other factors all come together to create a player who would be able to adjust to both flanks of the defense for Barcelona.
Moreover, despite some strong interest from Saudi Arabia for him, the player wants to continue competing. Even at 30, Cancelo believes he is young enough and energetic enough to compete at the highest level for the biggest titles at the biggest stage with a club like Barcelona.
However, it would only be possible for the Catalan giants to acquire the player if it can happen through a loan deal. While Man City will likely attach a purchase option even if they do agree to a loan, it will potentially not be insurmountable for Barcelona even with their financial limitations.
