FC Barcelona possess an embarrassment of riches when it comes to the talents present within their midfield. La Blaugrana have within their ranks two former Golden Boy Award winners, and alongside them other elite stars and proven champions.
The likes of Ilkay Gundogan, Frenkie De Jong, Gavi, and Pedri are some of the elite names in the Barcelona squad. Given their pedigree and fame, it is quite unusual to see Oriol Romeu lining up alongside them.
However, it is not just his lack of fame or recognition that makes it questionable, but rather the performances he continues to give in recent games.
Due to inconsistent performances that have shown both a lack of quality at times alongside a lack of focus, Xavi has seemingly lost faith in the former Girona player.
Ironically, the Catalan club that he arrived from is still feeling his loss. Despite having positionally replaced him, his contributions for them were too significant to properly replace.
Catalan pivot’s possible return
Now, according to Spanish outlet SPORT, Girona would even welcome a potential return for their former pivot. Aware that he is not exactly indisputable for Xavi, Girona remain optimistic. Believing that they would offer much more responsibility and respect for his talents, they continue to believe in a possible reunion.
This season, the youth of Barcelona has prevailed over Romeu’s experience. Despite being a graduate of La Masia, Romeu seems to lack that cutting edge that would allow him to thrive in the modern day for Barça. The 32-year-old could very well be on his way out of the club in the summer if he is unable to win back Xavi’s trust.
Girona’s master would be pleased
Michel, the current head coach of Girona, is particularly fond of Romeu’s talent. He would be among the first to welcome the veteran back if offered the chance. Barcelona managed to initially take him away from the Girona coach by paying his rather affordable €3.4 million release clause.
Unable to stop his departure then, Michel could get a chance at redemption. However, given that a lot can happen between now and the summer, the Catalan club does not ponder it too much. As for Barcelona, they will continue to hope Romeu can reawaken his best form.
His introduction back in Blaugrana colors was strong, but his form has dwindled since. It is now time for him to earn that respect back from both the coaches and the fans.
