Ilkay Gundogan was the biggest name that arrived at FC Barcelona in the last summer transfer window. The German joined the Catalan club after having fulfilled his contract at Manchester City.

Gundogan did not need long to adapt at his new club and has already become one of the most important players for Xavi. In fact, he is the only player in the Barcelona squad to have played all 24 official games this season and has accumulated the most minutes on the pitch.

The current season has not gone exactly as Gundogan would have wanted it to, as Xavi’s team lags the La Liga leaders Real Madrid and Girona by seven points. With such a gap to make up in the coming months, the midfielder will have a very challenging 2024 ahead of him.

Still, the last year was one of the most notable years in the midfielder’s career. As SPORT has noted, the German maestro himself recognized the high points he reached last year in a post on Instagram, where he also hinted at the competition that he will be looking forward to the most this year:

“The best year of my life so far. Becoming a father for the first time, winning the treble with Manchester City as the team’s captain, and signing for my childhood dream club, FC Barcelona. Thanks to everyone who supported me on this journey. I can’t wait for 2024 with the highlight of next summer: the Euro at home.”

This social media post was accompanied by photos of him celebrating these different milestones. Barcelona fans will be particularly happy with this post as the German has once again mentioned FC Barcelona as the club of his dreams since his childhood.

The Catalans will now be looking at Gundogan to lead the team towards important silverware this season, not only with his skills on the ball but also with his experience and leadership that he so extensively showcased during the last season with Manchester City.
