There are only a few days left before the official start of this summer’s transfer window, and FC Barcelona are working on a number of operations to strengthen their squad for the next season. The defense was one of the team’s main areas of strength this season, but the club is looking to further bolster with new arrivals.

One of the names that have been associated with the Blaugranes for the central defense is Inigo Martinez, who has been playing with Atheltic Club for the last few seasons. The Spaniard has been a mainstay in the backline of the Basque club and is one of the most experienced players in their team.

FC Barcelona have been interested in the defender and have their eyes on him as a replacement for Gerard Pique, who retired from club football in the middle of last season. While the club has not missed their former captain too much, primarily due to the impressive form of the Kounde, Araujo, Christensen, and Balde backline, they still believe another addition in the defense is needed going into the next season.

The fact that Martinez’ contract with Athletic Club was running out this season was another feature that made the player particularly attractive to the Catalans. A recent report from Mundo Deportivo in this regard claims that the player has himself announced through his Twitter account that he will not be renewing his contract with the Basque club, and will be leaving the club at the end of the season.

As reported previously, only FC Barcelona have been a serious contender for the center-back’s signing this summer, and they are not facing any significant competition for the player. The fact that he is leaving Athletic Club then could only mean that the player will be joining FC Barcelona in the summer.

Thus, Barcelona would get a highly experienced and skillful defender that will further strengthen their backline for the next season, without any fee. Barcelona fans will be hoping to see him perform to his expected levels when he dons the Garnet and Blue kit next season.
