It has been almost 11 months since the FC Barcelona midfielder Gavi last stepped on the pitch. The midfielder suffered a torn ACL during an international match in November 2023, and after undergoing surgery to treat this issue, he is still in his recovery process.
Fortunately, this recovery is going in the right direction, as the midfielder has returned to partial training with the group for the last few weeks. He is expected to return to availability after the October international break.
However, there is another issue that Barcelona have to address related to Gavi. His current contract is expiring in 2026, and he is one of the players whom the Blaugranes intend to build their future team around.
Thus, the Catalans are looking to ensure his long-term continuity at their club and will try to get his contract sorted before there is only one year left to deter other clubs from trying to pull Gavi away.
The club and the player’s agent, Ivan de la Pena, have not yet met to discuss this issue. Still both the parties are aware of Deco’s plans regarding the €90m-rated midfielder.
In this regard, SPORT reports that the player and the club are currently clear that this is not the right time to discuss this issue, as this can interfere with Gavi’s normal return to full fitness. Thus, Gavi’s contract renewal will be discussed only after the player has fully recovered and returned to the pitch.
Although Gavi is in the last stages of his recovery, there is still no exact date on when he might actually step on the pitch again. Once he is fully ready and available to play for Flick, Deco will open the negotiations with his agent, and try to ensure his long-term stay at the club, something that both the parties are desirous of.
