At the time of reporting, FC Barcelona are still yet to find their much-needed replacement for the departing club legend, Sergio Busquets. The Catalans are scurrying through the current market looking for options and at the moment, there are only a handful that are even feasible.
Despite having lost out on most of their initials targets such as Joshua Kimmich or Martin Zubimendi, Barcelona remain persistent in their hunt to find a ‘low-cost’ alternative to cover the defensive midfield position for at least a year until La Blaugrana can sort out their finances and potentially go for a more ideal candidate next year as per speculation.
Now, as has been reported by Spanish outlet Mundo Deportivo, Barcelona are continuously eyeing the prospect of signing former La Masia graduate and current Girona midfielder, Oriol Romeu.
The 31-year-old has reportedly already held talks with Barcelona and talks will continue to be held, with personal level differences not too big of a hurdle in this operation thus far and it will only be his registration that will need to be sorted out.
Communications between the two clubs however have been less fruitful. Barcelona hope to formally negotiate a fee for the defensive midfielder that is lower than his current €8 million release clause, whereas Girona are adamant on making it clear that the player would only leave if his entire release clause were to be paid.
The Catalan club is yet to address such a transfer or negotiate its relevant price with Girona directly, as has been reported by MD, but will soon be expected to do so.
On the other hand, Barcelona do possess the option of making use of their own academy products too in the scenario that Romeu does not end up arriving, but it is apparently Xavi Hernandez himself who believes his experience would be a great asset for Barca.
