Barcelona right-back target Juan Foyth

Barcelona to prioritize signing Argentine defender amidst lack of natural options at right-back

The activities of FC Barcelona for building their squad for the upcoming season are continuing unabated, as the club is looking at a number of options in the market to strengthen their team. One of the positions that the club is looking to bolster in particular is the right back.

Barcelona are the firm favorites to win this La Liga title, as they sit comfortably 11 points clear of the second place Real Madrid. A significant part in this charge to the title has been played by the team’s defense, as the backline of Kounde, Araujo, Christensen, and Balde has conceded only 11 goals in the league.

However, despite the defensive solidity provided by this defensive line, the club is aware that there is no natural right back in the starting line-up, which has impacted the team’s offensive output to some degree.

While Kounde has been impressive defensively, his playing style is not that of a Barcelona fullback, which involves running up and down the pitch throughout the match. Similarly, Sergi Roberto is also primarily a midfielder and has played at the flank only to compensate for the lack of other options.

To mitigate this problem, Javi Miguel of Diario AS reports that the club is prioritizing a move for a right back in the upcoming summer transfer window. He reports that Villareal’s Foyth is the main player the Catalan club is targeting this summer, but other possible options are also being looked at.

Juan Foyth is the starting right back for Villareal and has made 18 appearances for the Yellow Submarines in the league this season. In addition to right back, the player can also play at the center of the backline, and also in a defensive midfield position. He recently won the World Cup with his Argentina side, and being 25 years old, one can expect that he will develop further in the coming years.
