FC Barcelona had a highly impressive summer transfer window as they were able to get a host of high-profile players while spending a very low amount from their coffers.
Ilkay Gundogan was brought on a free transfer, while Oriol Romeu also did not cost Barcelona much money. The Catalans also got the Portuguese duo of Joao Felix and Joao Cancelo on loan without paying any loan fee.
Dilemma for Barcelona
All of these players have gelled seamlessly into their new club and have significantly improved Barcelona’s squad. While Gundogan and Romeu are now owned by Barcelona, the Catalans will still have to take care of the Portuguese duo as they are currently only on loan.
Barcelona are facing a complex situation with these two players. Their good performances with Barcelona this season can definitely help the Blaugranes compete for the top trophies. However, these performances will also increase their value and make it difficult for the Catalans to get them once their loan period ends.
Barcelona planning an innovative approach
Now SPORT reports that the Catalan club realizes that it will not be able to pay for any one of these players, and thus is looking to come up with some innovative formula to close these signings. The report further mentions that these aspects were already discussed with Jorge Mendes, who represents both Felix and Cancelo, this summer.
One of the ways being contemplated at the club is a swap deal. But Deco and the club understand that while such an approach can be appealing for Atletico Madrid, Manchester City would not be enticed by it unless Barcelona puts into frame one of their most highly-rated players.
For now, the Catalans have discussed these matters only with Jorge Mendes, and nothing further can be done until January. The first step would be to get the approval of the players themselves, and then if the salary limit allows, Barcelona will move forward with these operations.
